Kitten Plans

Distemper:  Feline distemper vaccination includes protection against several diseases,
including panleukopenia, a potentially fatal viral disease, rhinotracelits, calici & Chlamydia
psittaci which are upper respiratory diseases.  This vaccination must be boostered 4
weeks apart in order to be effective.  After the initial series, distemper is then given once
a year.

Rabies: Rabies is a fatal infection of the central nervous system.  Infection is usually
transmitted through the bite of an infected animal.  The first rabies vaccination given to
your kitten is good for one year.  After one year your pet will be given a rabies vaccination
which is good for 3 years.

Deworming: On your first visit we will be sending home 2 doses of Pyrantel, which is a
deworming medication.  This medication will rid your kitten of several types of worms such
as roundworm, whipworm, & hookworm.  You will give the first dose that same day, and
the second dose you will give 2 weeks later to complete the deworming process.

Fecal: For your second visit we will ask you to bring a stool sample.  This will allows us to
check for any worms that may have escaped the prior deworming.

Leukemia Vaccinations: We also highly recommend including a Feline Leukemia Test
and Feline Leukemia Vaccinations with your kitten plan.  Leukemia is the leading cause
of death from infectious agents in cats. This virus inhibits the immune system and results
in various types of cancer and other chronic diseases.  The virus is present in saliva, urine
and other body fluids and is typically passed from cat to cat by general contact, including
licking, biting, and sneezing.   If you would like to do a feline leukemia test before we
vaccinate (highly recommended) there is an additional cost.   There is no cure of feline
leukemia, and it is always fatal.  All we can do is protect your cat from infection by
vaccinating against the virus.
